McIntires in the Civil War
by Jonathan Tucker
As they did in all previous and subsequent conflicts, the descendants of Micum McIntire participated in one of the most difficult and wrenching conflicts in American history—the Civil War. Not surprisingly, given our geographic origins, most fought for the Union (we can’t find any who didn’t, but you never know—a few lived or worked in the South). For reasons of brevity, the participants will be listed under the state of their birth rather than the state(s) they served from or ended up living in. Under each state, the men will be listed in the order of their birth, oldest first.
As with previous conflicts, some women may have served, but we have not found any. The abbreviated biographies of these descendants of Micum McIntire will focus on their military participation. Parents will be listed, but not spouses or children. Spouses of Micum descendants who served are not included. Descendants are encouraged to research their soldiers and sailors further.
Dispersal
Note the frequent differences (and distances) between where these soldiers were born, where they served from, and where they died. These geographic shifts were often the result of migration generated at least in part by the disruptions and changes wrought by the War. James Albert McIntire (See NH below) for instance, was born in Alton, NH in 1844, but died in Alton, Kansas, in 1929. He knew the governor of the territory/state, and got involved in the borders wars over slavery there. The Micum McIntire clan was beginning to disperse outwards from its New England home grounds in more profound ways, and the Civil War hastened the process.
